SteamWorld Heist is out December 10 + Pricing

Howdy, a very delighted and excited Brjann here!

SteamWorld Heist has now been two years in the making. In that time, I’ve seen my colleagues evolve, get married and have babies – all while writing amazing amounts of brilliant code and drawing near-uncountable, beautiful strokes to make a wonderful game.

For a short while we talked about postponing the game into 2016, which would have felt like a huge defeat. And in the end we didn’t have to – Heist was ready!

You can imagine my relief and how much I’ve looked forward to today: The day when Julius has graciously let me take over the blog in order to announce the definite release date.

SteamWorld Heist Release Date

SteamWorld Heist launches on Nintendo 3DS in the Americas, Europe, Australia and New Zealand on December 10 at 14:00 UTC. We strongly suspect the game will rock your socks off. (Fortunately, we’ve been told that new socks are in abundant supply where you live.) The Japanese version will come later, as will all other platforms.

Pricing and Launch Discount

The regular price point will be $19.99 / €19.99 / £14.99. Yeah, we know it’s cheap for this much game, but that’s a whole other discussion. Let the simple comparison below suffice (it’s objective too, since math never lies):

  • SteamWorld Dig costs $9.99.
  • SteamWorld Heist is at least 10 times bigger and better than Dig.
  • Ergo: you’re getting a minimum of 5 times the value.
  • And the game takes at least 20 to 25 hours to finish!

We’re throwing in a launch discount as a Holiday gift to the Nintendo 3DS community. From launch until December 31, the price will be $16.99 / €16.99 / £11.99. Note that we don’t expect to discount the game for a very long while after that.

Exclusive 3DS Home Menu Theme

From launch until December 31, we’re also giving away an exclusive Nintendo 3DS Home Menu theme with every purchase of SteamWorld Heist. After that, the theme will never be available again. Like, never. Ever.

Release Trailer and Ambassador Winner

The SteamWorld Heist release trailer premieres on December 8.

Let’s conclude with announcing the results from our latest SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge, where we asked you to create quotes for the SteamWorld Heist launch trailer. The winner is J-Gamer Nathan with “Too robust to rust” – just enough of a message to let people pick it up. Congrats!

Are you excited for the release?

Appear In The SteamWorld Heist Launch Trailer – Ambassador Challenge #11

Howdy, partners!

The December release of SteamWorld Heist is soon upon us. Until we announce the exact release date and price point we have a new SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge for you. We’ve made sure it’s both fun and accessible since it’s the last one for quite a while.

The SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge Finale

We’re currently editing the SteamWorld Heist release trailer and we need your help! Game trailers usually feature in-game scenes plastered over with cut-and-paste quotes from reviews and previews. I bet you’re familiar with those. The quotes easily take much of the spotlight, so we’ll use them sparingly. But that won’t stop us from leaving one spot open for you!

The challenge is to write a quote for the SteamWorld Heist launch trailer. Since you haven’t played the game we don’t expect you to come up with something that sounds like you have. Instead, it could be your personal description of the game or what you hope to get out of it when you play it. Whatever you think would make sense to put in a game trailer.

Oh, you’re in a hurry if you want to enter! Check the deadline below “Rules and how to enter” 😀

What you can win

If you win you’ll become a SteamWorld Ambassador and be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release. The game launches on Nintendo 3DS eShop this December, with all other platforms coming after.

Prior to every platform release we’ll send you a download code for the full game. We’ll even add a few spares you can give to your friends. The Ambassadors also get access to exclusive information about the SteamWorld games as they progress in our private Facebook group.

Write your quote in the comments below. Include your name, online nick or Twitter handle too (so we know who we’re quoting). The deadline is Thursday November 26th at 9:59 AM CET (EU) / 03:59 AM PST (NA). We’ll reveal the winner in next week’s blog update (Tuesday). By submitting your quote you give us the rights to freely use it in our products, services and marketing assets.

The winning entry will not appear in the video game SteamWorld Heist. We also reserve the right to decide whether the winning quote actually appears in the release trailer or not. If no suitable entry is submitted before the deadline we’ll still choose a winner that gets all rewards mentioned above.

Create your entry freely, but let’s keep it safe for work and enjoyable for anyone!

SteamWorld Heist Screenshots Fiesta – in 3D

Howdy, partners! I hope you’re well 🙂

In last week’s Nintendo Direct we – finally! – announced that SteamWorld Heist is launching this December on Nintendo 3DS eShop in the Americas, Europe and Australia/New Zealand. At the same time we showed a bunch of new footage from the game.

Here’s the new gameplay in action:

While we’re preparing to announce price and release date, I think it’s a good time to show you new SteamWorld Heist screenshots. They each represent important aspects of the game but contain no major spoilers. Scan the QR codes with your Nintendo 3DS to view the images in 3D.

Howdy, partners! This week I’ll address the number one question people ask us daily:

“How’s SteamWorld Heist coming along?”

It’s going really, really well! Thanks for asking. The game is nearing completion and fairly soon we’ll be able to send the game to Nintendo for final approval. The game will launch this year and we can’t wait to show you more of it as launch draws closer…

Here are a couple of new screenshots:

The last stretch is all about polishing, bug fixing, balancing, proof-reading and tweaking to make the very best game we possibly can. It’s going to be worth the wait. So stay tuned for more news regarding release date, price and other cool details in the near future. We just got a capture kit from Nintendo, so when the game is polished enough we’ll show you lots of direct feed gameplay 😀

Proof that the game is in its final stages comes in the form of the final age ratings for all release regions. By having these finalized as early as possible we’re making sure not to delay the game because of slow rating processes. Here they are in all their glory:

Look at all those age ratings!

We’re so close!

Not only our hype is building. At events all over Europe fans are getting their hands on SteamWorld Heist for the very first time. We asked a few of them to share their first impressions with us:

Photo Contest Winners

It’s time announce the winning entries in last week’s SteamWorld themed photo challenge, where the prize was becoming a SteamWorld Ambassador. We asked for photos of “SteamWorld IRL” and you delivered exactly that! The winners are:

  • Vix Chan’s cosplay of Rusty from SteamWorld Dig
  • Zilochius Industries’ “The Last Day of an Old Scrapper”

Congrats, you’ll soon get an invitation to our secret Facebook group. As a SteamWorld Ambassador you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist on all platforms starting this fall (you get to invite your friends, too). You’ll also get exclusive information on the SteamWorld games as they progress.

As always we feel a little guilty towards all of the other contestants. But keep at it and you too might become an ambassador one day!

What do you think of the new screenshots?

SteamWorld Photo Contest – SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge #10

SteamWorld Photo Contest – Ambassador Challenge #10

Howdy, partner!

This week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge is: take a photo of anything from SteamWorld… in the real world! What this means is you have to get creative. Maybe you can reenact a shootout from SteamWorld Heist by taking cover behind your sofa and pointing your finger gun at the camera? All donned in your coolest hat, of course. Or if you have a big pile of dirt somewhere… Why not climb it and strike Rusty’s victory pose from SteamWorld Dig? The world is your playground.

Here’s our take to get you started:

Here's our take on SteamWorld Heist IRL.

Shooting off imaginary hats with imaginary guns: Check!

Your entry can be silly like ours, but don’t let that limit your creation. Previous SteamWorld Ambassador Challenges have taught us we can expect anything from you, so we’ll choose a winner based on general creativity and fun factor. Go wild, but take care: we don’t want you get hurt in the making!

What you win…

If you win you’ll become a SteamWorld Ambassador and be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release. The game will launch on Nintendo 3DS this fall with all other platforms coming shortly after. Prior to every platform release we’ll send you a download code for the full game. We’ll even add a few spares you can give to your friends. The Ambassadors also get access to exclusive information about the SteamWorld games as they progress.

Rules and how to enter…

Upload or link to your picture (and ask any questions) in the comments below. We need your entry by Sunday October 11th at 23:59 CEST (EU) / 5:59 PM EDT (NA). We’ll reveal the winner in next week’s blog update (Tuesday). By submitting your images you give us the rights to freely use them in our products, services and marketing materials. The winning entry will not appear in the video game SteamWorld Heist.

You are completely free with your entry and are allowed to do some basic image editing. But let’s keep it safe for work and enjoyable for everyone. Also, make sure you’re allowed to share what’s in your picture before posting it online (including all faces, belongings, information and locations). It’s optional to include people in the photo.

SteamWorld Heist on Nintendo 3DS at EGX 2015 in Birmingham

SteamWorld Heist at EGX + Billy Gill’s Back Story Winner

Howdy partners!

Julius is home with a severe cold after shaking a lot of hands at Eurogamer Expo (EGX) in Birmingham this weekend (next time we’ll bring a bucket of hand sanitizers), so he’s instructed me to take care of the blogging this week. Sorry for being a few days late, this blogging tech is still new to me. Prepare for wordiness! 😀

The latest show we visited with SteamWorld Heist – Gamescom in Germany this August – was a true test of character and stamina. Gamescom is by far the biggest game expo in the world, with around half a million visitors and booths spread out over about a dozen gigantic halls. You’d better be both very fit and very patient! By contrast, EGX fits snugly into one hall, and even the biggest exhibitors – Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, EA – felt compact yet packed with content. It’s great to be able to walk around and “see everything” in less than 20 minutes.

And when you don’t have to walk forever, you discover so many nuggets! I liked a lot of the stuff I played, but I specifically fell in love with two very different games, Mushroom 11 and Lichtspeer. I certainly hope they both do all right. I guess as an indie developer I’m biased, but I seem to enjoy indie games more than anything; many of them are so to-the-point and just charming.

Brjann playing Mushroom 11

Brjann playing Mushroom 11

Nintendo had set up a SteamWorld Heist station for us smack in the middle of their booth, where we had a constant flow of people playing – and, to our relief, enjoying – our 10-minute demo of the game. It was noisy and at times also chaotic, but all wrapped in a happy atmosphere. We also had time to sit down with the press and talk shop. That’s always a bit nervous; what if I fail at infecting them with my excitement for the game, or what if they don’t understand or don’t like the gameplay? I’m like a bouncy five-year-old in that respect: “Come on! Love it! Get it!” And yes… they got it. 🙂

SteamWorld Heist's display at EGX

SteamWorld Heist’s display at EGX

There is something special and familial about Nintendo: they don’t treat us like rock stars (most probably because we’re not), but they definitely don’t regard us as thin air either. It’s more like we’re cousins, perhaps, or friends. For example, their EGX developer party was not held at a cool club, but in the back room of a pub. You could argue that they’re being cheap (and I guess it was relatively cheap), but the point is that all the Nintendo folks were there, with us. Talk about making your developers feel important. The night ended with an incredibly loud punk band that happened to play at the same pub. In my humble opinion punk will always beat techno, which is what we’re usually served at dev-conference parties. I got back to the hotel late that night, very happy and with my ears still ringing.

As soon as Julius is back on his feet, we’ll post videos and more images from EGX!

Who is Billy Gill? – SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge #9

Who is Billy Gill? – SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge #9

The Billy Gill Back Story Winner

Last week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge was to provide a plausible back story for Billy Gill, our tight-lipped, gun-toting fish robot. And again we got so many wonderful entries! I have to tell you it’s really hard to pick winners for these challenges. Most everyone in the office gets involved, and we’re both flattered and overjoyed by the efforts. If it would have made any sense, we’d let everyone win.

So many of the entries would work well, but one stood out. The winner is:

  • “Aboard the Titanium” by jmaster2710

As the author mentioned in the comment, they went overboard and made a comic that is simply irresistible. We made a point of judging it fairly against the text-based entries. It didn’t win because it’s a comic – but because it’s concise and there’s a marvellous twist to it. See for yourselves:

Billy Gill's backstory – Comic Edition

Congrats jmaster2710, you’ll soon get an invitation to our secret Facebook group. SteamWorld YouTube Series

If you’re following our updates I’m sure you know we’re regularly uploading videos to the Image & Form YouTube channel. The series is a container for all sorts of content: Q & As, interviews with staff, let’s plays, discussions, contests, announcements, fun randomness and other SteamWorld related content with the community in focus.

Where do you think Billy’s lover went?

Who is Billy Gill? – SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge #9

Who is Billy Gill? – SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge #9

Howdy, partners!

ALL main characters in SteamWorld Heist (including Billy Gill) have set personalities and backstories. Compared to SteamWorld Dig we’ve fleshed out the story and character arcs extensively! It’s something we hope you’ll enjoy discovering in SteamWorld Heist when we release it later this year.

But while it’s still a mystery we thought it’d be fun to hear what you believe to be the backstory of one of the robots! We’ve talked quite a bit about the game’s protagonist Captain Piper and her trusty crew mate Seabrass. But not much is known about the blue fishbot Billy Gill… He’s been in our posters and gameplay videos from the very start. But what’s his deal? Who is he, where is he from and what has he experienced?

This week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge…

Guess Billy Gill’s backstory. It’s as simple as that. The easiest way is to write it in the comments below. But if you want to draw something or have anything else in mind instead, feel free to make your idea happen! There will be only one winner this week, just like last time. It will be the entry we think is the most fun and creative.

The winning entry will not become an official part of the official SteamWorld Heist lore since we’re nearing the final stages of development and simply can’t put in much more content. But see it as a chance of going nuts with creativity! The sky (or in this case, the galaxy) is the limit 😀

Inspiration

What we do know of Billy Gill is that he:

  • Is deceptively easy-going.
  • Looks rather fishy.
  • Has a cute smile and big, friendly eyes.
  • To our knowledge only speaks with one word: “Blub”.

Good reads for inspiration are the backstories of Captain Piper and Seabrass. Also, take a look at the SteamWorld game’s timeline for even more lore:

Write a Tagline for SteamWorld Heist

Write the SteamWorld Heist Tagline – Ambassador Challenge #8

Howdy, partners!

This week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge is simple to explain but equally hard to master: We want you to write the tagline for SteamWorld Heist. As you may recall, SteamWorld Dig has the subtitle “A Fistful of Dirt” (a not-so-subtle nod to the similarly named Spaghetti Western film). We want something even better for SteamWorld Heist and firmly believe that you are up to the challenge.

Exactly how the winning tagline will be used is still up in the air. But try to write it so it would make sense to put it beneath the game’s logo. It has to be short, catchy, relatable and suit the game perfectly.

Heist_logo_1920x1080

What to write?

This challenge will only have one winner. It’s a first for the SteamWorld Ambassador Challenges, and I think it’ll spice things up quite a bit. If no suitable entry is submitted before the deadline (see below) we will still pick a winner to use as inspiration when writing game descriptions for our websites and online outlets.

What you win…

If you win you’ll become a SteamWorld Ambassador and be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release. The game will launch on one or two platforms at a time starting this fall, and prior to every platform release we’ll send you a download code for the full game. SteamWorld YouTube Series + Ancient Relic Winners

Howdy, partners! How are you?

We’re right in the middle of developing SteamWorld Heist and everything’s progressing smoothly. It’s going be a lot of fun letting you get your hands on the game later this fall!

Last week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge turned out to be a really fun experience, and your suggestions made made us laugh and think big when it comes to the lore of SteamWorld. I can guarantee you that the scope of Heist is much grander than compared to SteamWorld Dig – not just the lore and story, more gameplay content as well.

The Ancient Relic Winners

We chose three of your relic suggestions. All winning entries will be interpreted by our artists/writers and appear in the final version of SteamWorld Heist. Here they are:

  • “Ström in a Can” (a can of fermented herring or “surströmming”, a disgusting Swedish delicacy) by Flatcross
  • “The Ancient Steam” (electric iron)  gerb1977
  • “The Last Hamburger” (non-decomposing burger) by mirkosp

As always we feel a little guilty when we only choose a handful of SteamWorld Ambassadors. But keep at it and you too might become an ambassador one day!

SteamWorld YouTube Series

If you’re following our updates I’m sure you know we’re regularly uploading videos to the Image & Form YouTube channel. We think it’s time to up our game and create even better video content for you. We’ve geared up with cameras, microphones, tripods and other video equipment to create a video series that is easy on the eyes, as well as entertaining and interesting.

The concept is similar to Nintendo Minute and PlayStation Access, but with our own twist of course. The series will have a unique name and be a container for all sorts of content: Q & As, interviews with staff, let’s plays, discussions, contests, announcements, fun randomness and other SteamWorld related content with the community in focus.

Create Ancient Relics for SteamWorld Heist – Ambassador Challenge #7

Howdy, partners!

Up until now you have helped us create many things related to SteamWorld Heist: graphics, lore, community activities, names for locations and items… and a lot of other cool stuff. It’s been really fun for us to have you develop the game with us! A huge “thank you” from all of us at the office 😀

But we’re not done with the SteamWorld Ambassador Challenges. Far from!

This week’s challenge…

SteamWorld Heist is set in a post-apocalyptic future where there are no signs left of the human race. Some strange human item can still be found at certain shops, though. These items are referred to as “ancient relics” and go for ridiculous prices!

Ancient relics look a lot like everyday stuff from Earth in 2015. Like smartphones, keyboards or nuclear toasters. But they can also be simpler objects like potato peelers or preserved rolls of toilet paper.

Ancient human communication devices.

Ancient human communication devices.

We want you to describe an ancient relic we can put into SteamWorld Heist. Your relic should have a unique name, look, short description/backstory and not be bigger than a small TV or smaller than a pen. Our artists and writers will look at each entry and draw/write the ones they feel fit the game the most. You don’t have to draw your relic but are of course welcome to upload a quick sketch if you want to 😀

What you win…

If you win you’ll become a SteamWorld Ambassador and be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release.
