Introducing: SteamWorld Heist!

The cat’s outta the bag! Welcome, SteamWorld Heist! It’s the next game in the SteamWorld series and we aim to release it in spring 2015.  Platforms, price and release date are yet to be determined. We’ve been hard at work since last year and we think it shows. Earlier today, Brjann said with typical modesty: “It will be full of surprises and probably the best game ever”.

Here it is!

Cowbots in space

So what’s SteamWorld Heist about? In short: space adventures and survival. You’re the captain of a team of ragtag robots who explore and scavenge the remains of a destroyed world. You board enemy ships and command your crew in a unique variety of turn-based combat. I was in shock the first time I heard about it!

Taking place some time after SteamWorld Dig, a cataclysmic event has shattered the planet and forced its population into steam-driven spaceships. It’s a robot-eat-robot world out there, and water is desperately hard to come by. Heisting other ships and bases – bad guys fortunately, the lot of them – is their only way to remain in operation.

Heist isn’t a sequel to SteamWorld Dig. But it’s set in the same universe and the cowbots are still the heroes. A lot has happened to SteamWorld since then, and we want to give you a game that is radically different. Partly because we really wanted to make a turn-based strategy game, but also because it felt like a clever move. The obvious follow-up would’ve been Dig 2, but we wanted to surprise you instead.

Did we succeed? 😉

Thank you for spreading the love!

All our success with SteamWorld Dig comes from you, our awesome and cheerful community. Without you guys we would be nothing. If you want to continue spreading the love, we just launched the official SteamWorld Heist website where you can read all about the game and share the game with your friends. We have also prepared a special kit with images and art from the game. You can download it here and create your own SteamWorld Heist pictures in minutes!

“SteamWorld Heist”, what a great name! I look forward to this one!

  • minirop

Now the big question is “on which platform will I buy it?” … why not all? o/

    • It will be released on “all” platforms. We’re still figuring out the release schedule 😀

  • Lou Contaldi

1.) This takes place years after SteamWorld Dig, however there is no lifespan on robots. Can we expect to see Rusty or anyone else in the gang in the newest iteration?

2.) While there have been no announced systems, should consumers expect another tiered release similar to SteamWorld Dig.

3.) Lastly, how will Image & Form’s/Zoink latest venture into self-publishing influence the style and method to developing and promoting SteamWorld Heist?

    • The steambots have lifespans. They wither when they get old, remember Cranky? There will probably be hints to Rusty and the gang from SteamWorld Dig 🙂

  • curbles

So what were the hints were supposed to pick up from the last teaser blog entry?

    • The first letter of each paragraph spelled out Heist.

      • curbles

Lol I heard some people talking about that but thought it would be too obvious. I guess not!

        • lol Yeah, I know what you mean. However, I probably would never have noticed if somebody else didn’t point it out.

        • It’s the oldest trick in the book! Glad it worked 😀

  • Daniel Fugate

My 3DS needs this game! Probably my Wii U too. Oh man.

    • Will definitely come 😀 On both! Not sure in which order though. We aim to release it on as many platforms as possible!

  • Miguel SGTC Monteiro

I wasn’t expecting that for sure! ahah but it sounds interesting, not as much as Dig, but I’ll definitely give it a shot!

  • WiiLovePeace

Awesome! It looks like space will look *really* beautiful, can’t wait to play it in HD on my Wii U! 😀

    • Thank you! It looks beautiful in action. Can’t wait to show you 🙂

  • smashbrolink

    Turn-based strategy?
    So, like Fire Emblem?
If so, I’m not sure I’ll get it. I’ve never been good with SRPG’s…

    • It will have some real-time elements to it as well. It’s not a typical JRPG in classic Pokémon or Final Fantasy fashion 🙂

      • smashbrolink

Okay, well, I’ll have to have the system explained better, then, because right now it doesn’t sound like it’s got any.
I can’t recall any strategy RPG outside of Valkyria Chronicles using any sort of real-time elements, honestly, and what Valkyria did, didn’t pull it far enough away from being a SRPG for me to enjoy the game.
They’ll have to show me exactly how the game’s combat system plays out before I can judge whether its fit for me or not; I don’t have a lot of love for Strategy RPG’s because the pace of battles becomes far too slow for my liking.

        • I understan you 🙂 Just saying ‘real-time’ without showing more is a bit misguiding. Sorry about that. We’ll have more to show you in the near future. Hopefully you’ll like it. If not, were totally ok with it 🙂

          • smashbrolink

            Thanks for being understanding!
I’ll keep a close eye on this page; Steam World Dig was an unexpected sleeper hit for me so I’m eager to see if you can recapture my attention with its sequel.

          • Thank you 🙂 You rock!

  • prudis

looks great , will probably buy it when (if) it hits steam

    • Steam (PC/Mac/Linux) is a given! 😀 We just don’t know when at the moment. But will definitely happen 🙂

      • prudis

great thx for info 😉 cant wait for more footage/info on that

  • Sorry for late reply! It will eventually be on 3DS, Steam, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, Xbox One and hopefully a few other platforms 😀 not sure when and in which order. We aim to release the game in spring 2015 🙂

    • CrocoGuy

What about for those of us still back on ps3? Any chance for us to get it too? Found out about the game cause I’m an SPG fan love the video and song! : )

  • Rinn
