The Image & Form Crew 2018-ish

Image & Form – The Complete History Podcast

Happy summer, everyone!

We’ll take a few weeks off to finally spend some time inside, watching anime and eating way to much blue cheese. That might just be me, I’m sure the devs will enjoy everything else the summer has to offer!

We’re not leaving you hanging, though. We just uploaded a new Engine Room episode. In this longer-than-ever episode Brjánn tells you the tale of Image & Form and delves deep into the studio’s ups and downs and how we went from being professional PowerPoint makers to full-time game developers. We made games long before SteamWorld, actually. You’ve just probably never heard of them!

Check out the video:

You can download an MP3 version if you prefer listening offline while traveling or on the beach or something (you won’t really miss anything crucial). Click here to download the file (right-click and save on PC)!

Expect us to be back on social media and via email as usual at the end of June/beginning of August. Until then we hope you enjoy your summer and play a ton of games (if that’s your thing, which I suspect it is).

See you soon! What are your summer plans?

What’s next for Image & Form?

Howdy, partners! How are you? I thought I’d give you a brief update on the SteamWorld Heist development status and use this opportunity to answer some frequently asked questions about what we’re currently up to.

SteamWorld Heist is out and it feels great!

SteamWorld Heist is out on Steam, PS4/Vita, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and iOS. It’s taken us three years to come this far. Three years?! Yeah, that’s right. It’s a long time and at this point we’re more than ready to let Captain Piper and her hearty crew steer the ship on their own. Knowing our rag-tag robots are in your capable hands feels great. Thanks for your support in making SteamWorld Heist a resounding success!

SteamWorld Heist was awarded the prestigious "Editors' Choice" on the App Store.

SteamWorld Heist was awarded the prestigious “Editors’ Choice” on the App Store.

Will there be more content for SteamWorld Heist?

We’re not ruling out the possibility, but on the other hand we don’t have any plans for big content updates or DLC.

What about Android and Xbox One?

The plan was to release SteamWorld Heist on Xbox One and Android this year. While those versions may still happen in the future, we’re frantically working on a new game that’s eating up more and more time. At Image & Form we’re only 18 people and always have to choose our next venture carefully. Because of time constraints we’ve decided to focus on the new title and put the Android and Xbox One versions of Heist on hold.

I understand this is a letdown for many of you. Please ask me any questions about our decision in the comments. I’ll be happy to answer 🙂

So, what are we working on?

We’re cooking up something special for Nintendo Switch. It’s a secret for now and we’ll announce the game when the time’s ready! Follow us on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to stay up to date with our latest news. I think you’ll be happy to learn what it is 😉

What do you want to see from us in the future?

Introducing: SteamWorld Heist!

The cat’s outta the bag! Welcome, SteamWorld Heist! It’s the next game in the SteamWorld series and we aim to release it in spring 2015.  Platforms, price and release date are yet to be determined. We’ve been hard at work since last year and we think it shows. Earlier today, Brjann said with typical modesty: “It will be full of surprises and probably the best game ever”.

Here it is!

Cowbots in space

So what’s SteamWorld Heist about? In short: space adventures and survival. You’re the captain of a team of ragtag robots who explore and scavenge the remains of a destroyed world. You board enemy ships and command your crew in a unique variety of turn-based combat. I was in shock the first time I heard about it!

Taking place some time after SteamWorld Dig, a cataclysmic event has shattered the planet and forced its population into steam-driven spaceships. It’s a robot-eat-robot world out there, and water is desperately hard to come by. Heisting other ships and bases – bad guys fortunately, the lot of them – is their only way to remain in operation.

Heist isn’t a sequel to SteamWorld Dig. But it’s set in the same universe and the cowbots are still the heroes. A lot has happened to SteamWorld since then, and we want to give you a game that is radically different. Partly because we really wanted to make a turn-based strategy game, but also because it felt like a clever move. The obvious follow-up would’ve been Dig 2, but we wanted to surprise you instead.

Did we succeed? 😉

Thank you for spreading the love!

All our success with SteamWorld Dig comes from you, our awesome and cheerful community. Without you guys we would be nothing. If you want to continue spreading the love, we just launched the official SteamWorld Heist website where you can read all about the game and share the game with your friends. We have also prepared a special kit with images and art from the game. You can download it here and create your own SteamWorld Heist pictures in minutes!

New collab: Image & Form and Zoink

Howdy, everyone!

I have something HUGE to share with all of you today. Unique things are brewing here in Gothenburg, Sweden. Two local renowned indie studios just started an intimate collaboration on self-publishing without merging.

Can you guess WHICH studios? 😉

They are: Image & Form and… Zoink!

Together the two of us shall embark on a joint publishing collab adventure. While the development side of things will continue to run separately just as before, the Image & Form self-publishing team will take care of marketing and publishing for both studios.

It’s all about the gamers

But what does this mean for you? It’s simple: We become better at handling the paperwork so you can get even better games.

Zoink's games are beautiful, wicked and hilariously funny. Have you played Stick It to The Man?

Zoink’s latest game, Stick It to The Man!, has been a smash hit on most modern platforms. It has been downloaded more than 1.3 million times (!). Before Stick It, Zoink crafted other beautiful IPs and creative games for others, but now think it’s time to take ownership of their coming titles.

CEO of Zoink, Klaus Lyngeled, is just as excited about this as we are:

“Naturally, we want to focus on our own ideas, and now we’re finally able to! My vision for Zoink has always been to create an incredibly creative studio. The collaboration with Image & Form means we can lift the studio to new levels.”

A unique collaboration

Our very own Image & Form honcho, Brjann Sigurgeirsson, is very excited about this as well. Unsurprisingly, he is one of the key people behind this joint venture.

“I look forward to working with Zoink and push their wonderful games as well. Together, we’ll be a real powerhouse – two great studios with separate visions and common goals.”

Klaus continues:

“Earlier we’ve worked with dedicated publishers in order to minimize economic risks. While safe, this also meant we had to give up IP rights, revenue shares and means to influence marketing. Image & Form have self-published for a good while now, and they’re doing a great job at it.”

Enough with the press release-like boasting, you two! 😉 By keeping it local and small we won’t have to become a publisher that spreads too thin. Zoink and Image & Form can continue giving you the games you want without relying on an external publisher. Which, in the end, is good for both you gamers and us developers.

Do you think Image & Form and Zoink are a match made in heaven? 😀

New recruit: Amanda joins our forces

In a previous blog post we talked about how we’re growing in order to make our new SteamWorld game as amazing as possible for you. We recently hired five people (Markus, Robert, Elinore, Julius and myself) and now we just got a new intern! We would like to welcome Amanda Elm to our team!

Amanda is a student at The Game Assembly and will be joining our team as a graphic artist. She will be here for eight months. In order for you to get to know her a little bit we asked her some questions.

1. What’s your background before starting at Image & Form?

I studied Game Art at a school called The Game Assembly.

 2. What’s your favourite video game?

One of the most difficult questions ever, but if I have to pick just one I’d go with Beyond Good And Evil.

 3. What are you working with at the moment?

I’m doing all sorts of different art related stuff for the new SteamWorld game. Incredibly enough the other artists let me do more than just grunt-style intern work and it’s awesome!

4. When did you first hear about Image & Form?

I had never heard of Image & Form until Brjann and Markus came to our school and did a presentation of the company to lure in us students. Brjann talked about the company’s history, and I realized that as a kid, I had in fact laughed at my younger sister as she played educational games with an orange bunny, and that these guys were responsible for making those precious gems.

5. How does Mario shoot fire underwater?

I believe he’s cheating.

Have any questions for Amanda? Want to give her the greatest welcome known to Earth? The comment section is all yours! Also, don’t forget to follow Amanda on Twitter!

So from all of us at Image & Form: Welcome to the team, Amanda! 😀

All the best,

PR & Marketing Manager
