Design Hats for SteamWorld Heist! (CLOSED) + Summer Break

Update: The contest is now closed. Check the comments section for info on the winners! Thanks so much for your awesome entries 😀

Original article:

Howdy, partners!

We’re taking a short summer break until August 1. We’ll be mostly offline during this time, so don’t worry if we don’t get back to you right away. Once we’re back from the beach we’ll talk with you as usual! In the meantime we have a competition for you, in which you can create in-game content for SteamWorld Heist. The winners will get free SteamWorld games and exclusive info on future titles.

Check the video for full details (or scroll down to read what’s up):

The SteamWorld Ambassador Challenges Return

Thanks to your incredible support and outcry for more, the SteamWorld Ambassador Challenges finally make a grand return! We’d like you to design a hat that will appear in SteamWorld Heist as part of a DLC hat pack. A quick sketch on a napkin or on your phone will do just fine. Our artists will then choose their favorites and incorporate them in the game. Please name the hat and give it a short backstory!

As you know, steambots are crazy about hats. A sort of hat fetish, if you like. It’s central to their existence to wear a cool headpiece. Hats are collectibles you can equip your band of rag-tag robots with (you can even shoot off enemy hats and wear them). Players are loving this!

A simple sketch of your hat design will work just fine!

What you can win

The winners will become SteamWorld Ambassadors. As a SteamWorld Ambassador you’ll get free keys for every version of every SteamWorld game. Ever. We’ll even add a few spares you can give to your friends. You and the other Ambassadors also get access to exclusive information about the SteamWorld games as they progress. This is done in our private Facebook group.

Rules and how to enter

Upload your hats (and ask any questions) in the comments below. We need your designs by Sunday July 31 at 23:59 CEST (EU) / 5:59 PM EDT (NA). We’ll pick the winners once we’re back from our summer break and will reveal the new SteamWorld Ambassadors in early August. By submitting your creations you give us the rights to freely use them in our products, services and marketing assets.

We also reserve the right to judge whether the winning entry appears in the final game or not, and might alter the design to fit it the game’s art style. If no suitable entry is submitted before the deadline we’ll still choose a winner that gets all rewards mentioned above.

Create your entry freely, but let’s keep it safe for work and enjoyable for anyone!

Hit us with your best (hat) shot! Good luck and happy summer 😀

Who won?

SteamWorld YouTube Series + Ancient Relic Winners

Howdy, partners! How are you?

We’re right in the middle of developing SteamWorld Heist and everything’s progressing smoothly. It’s going be a lot of fun letting you get your hands on the game later this fall!

Last week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge turned out to be a really fun experience, and your suggestions made made us laugh and think big when it comes to the lore of SteamWorld. I can guarantee you that the scope of Heist is much grander than compared to SteamWorld Dig – not just the lore and story, more gameplay content as well.

The Ancient Relic Winners

We chose three of your relic suggestions. All winning entries will be interpreted by our artists/writers and appear in the final version of SteamWorld Heist. Here they are:

  • “Ström in a Can” (a can of fermented herring or “surströmming”, a disgusting Swedish delicacy) by Flatcross
  • “The Ancient Steam” (electric iron)  gerb1977
  • “The Last Hamburger” (non-decomposing burger) by mirkosp

Congrats! You’ll soon get an invitation to our secret Facebook group. As SteamWorld Ambassadors you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist on all platforms starting this fall (you get to invite your friends, too). You’ll also get exclusive information on the SteamWorld games as they progress.

As always we feel a little guilty when we only choose a handful of SteamWorld Ambassadors. But keep at it and you too might become an ambassador one day!

SteamWorld YouTube Series

If you’re following our updates I’m sure you know we’re regularly uploading videos to the Image & Form YouTube channel. We think it’s time to up our game and create even better video content for you. We’ve geared up with cameras, microphones, tripods and other video equipment to create a video series that is easy on the eyes, as well as entertaining and interesting.

The concept is similar to Nintendo Minute and PlayStation Access, but with our own twist of course. The series will have a unique name and be a container for all sorts of content: Q & As, interviews with staff, let’s plays, discussions, contests, announcements, fun randomness and other SteamWorld related content with the community in focus.

Here are a couple of teaser images:

As barebones as a teaser can get, right?

Fan Art Winners + Graphics Team Q&A

Howdy, partner! How are you?

First of all, let’s just say we were blown away by your amazing entries in last week’s SteamWorld Ambassador fan art challenge. You really fired up the entire team, which got some of our artists to record a special Q&A video as thanks for your beautiful artwork. Amanda, Jakob and Agnes had a lot of fun answering your questions.

Check it out:

Fan Art Winners

In all previous SteamWorld Ambassador Challenges we’ve been able to narrow it down to three winners. But this time it was simply impossible, so we decided to crown FOUR new SteamWorld Ambassadors. We chose the art we felt was the most unique/fun/beautiful or otherwise awesome. It was hard, but here they are:

  • Brittany Epic Morales
  • Stephen Patmore
  • Uggy G
  • Zoroko

Congratulations! Expect an e-mail soon with all the stuff you need to know about being a SteamWorld Ambassador. Here are the winning entries in all their glory:

Over to you:

Big thanks to all who submitted art for the challenge. All were simply beautiful! We’re planning great things for your creations. You might for instance see them on social media in the future and on the walls of our office. We’re planning to use every single one. Thank you for making it possible! 😀

What do you think we should do with all the fan art that was submitted?

SteamWorld Heist Q&A (E3 plans, story, pricing) + Social Media Winners

Howdy, everyone!

This is the week leading up to E3 and we have a lot of cool stuff to share with you today. We’ll start with a brand new Q&A with me (Julius) and our project manager Marco Podda. Marco is the perfect team member to answer your awesome questions. We talk about our plans for E3 next week, the story in SteamWorld Heist, pricing, special editions and much more. You’ll also get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look.

Check it out:

Last week’s ambassador winners

Last week’s social media challenge proved to be a really interesting one. We had a fun time choosing one ambassador in each of the three categories (hashtag, YouTube series, other creative idea). So without further ado, here are this week’s new SteamWorld Ambassadors:

  • Hashtag: “#LiveSteam” by mirpkered
  • YouTube series: “Community Q&A with different team members” by The Geek Guru
  • Other creative idea(s): Much of the fun stuff submitted by ladyfox14

Congrats! You’ll get an invitation to our secret Facebook group pretty soon. So stay tuned and check your inbox for e-mail. As SteamWorld Ambassadors you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist on all platforms starting this fall (and you get to invite your friends, too). You’ll also get exclusive information on the SteamWorld games as they progress.

Many of the entries were very similar to each other so we went with the ideas that were the most original and/or most realistic from our point of view. Since so many of you asked us to do live streams and Snapchats we have decided to look into how we can make that a reality, too!

Over to you!

What do you want us to unveil at E3 next week?

Show us your social media skills! – SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge #4

Howdy, partners!

It’s time for a new SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge! Up until now we’ve asked you to help us write witty dialogue, design awesome hats and come up with cool weapon names. What they all have in common is that they’re great examples of how artistry and creativity are much needed skills when it comes to developing games.

But a video game is not all about art, design and code, you know. The people playing the game are equally (if not more) important. At Image & Form we think that the gaming community decides if a game makes it or not. So to really get to know what our fans want we talk to as many of you as we possibly can on social media.

This week’s challenge…

We want you come up with fun ideas for us to use in social media. We have three categories, which means you have three chances to win. The categories are:

  1. Hashtag for Twitter and Instagram: It should be a short and catchy one that really captures the feeling you get from the SteamWorld games and Image & Form. Make it personal and relatable. Like Nike’s #justdoit and Red Bull’s #givesyouwings.
  2. YouTube video series: Anything you would like to see on a regular basis.
  3. Your best other creative idea: Go wild! Want us to go on Snapchat, Pinterest or host weekly Twitch streams? You decide what you want us to do in this category.

The entries don’t have to be flashy. In fact, the more doable your idea is, the more likely we are to pick it. A good idea is to attach a link to videos or other content that you really like so we get a better picture of what you want us to do!

Shoot us your best ideas!

Shoot us your best ideas!

What you can win…

The winners will become SteamWorld Ambassadors. As a SteamWorld Ambassador you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release. The game will launch on one or two platforms at a time starting this fall, and prior to every platform release we’ll send you a download code for the full game. We’ll even add a few spares you can give to your friends. You and the other ambassadors also get access to exclusive information about the SteamWorld games as they progress.

How to enter…

Leave your entries (and ask any questions) in the comments below. We need your ideas by Friday June 5th at 23:59 CEST (EU) / 5:59 PM EDT (NA). We’ll pick a winner over the weekend and reveal the SteamWorld Ambassadors in next week’s Tuesday update. By submitting your ideas you give us the right to freely use them in our daily work. We reserve the right to judge whether we use the winning entries or not, and might alter them as we see fit.

Got what it takes? Hit us with your best shot!

Create EPIC ONE-LINERS for SteamWorld Heist and become a SteamWorld Ambassador

Create EPIC ONE-LINERS for SteamWorld Heist – Ambassador Challenge #3

Howdy, partners!

After last week’s reveal of the amazing hat design winners we thought it was time for a new SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge! Watch our CEO Brjánn introduce the challenge to you or scroll down to read the video summary.

This week’s challenge…

As Brjánn says in the video above we want you to create epic one-liners for the robots to say in SteamWorld Heist. More specifically we want you to create lines for the faction of robots known as Scrappers. They’re the scourge of the outer rim of habitable space and is the first enemy faction Captain Piper and her crew will encounter in SteamWorld Heist.

More specifically we want you to create three lines (in other words: three chances to win). Create your lines based on these emotions:

  1. Anger
  2. Glee (evil delight)
  3. Shock

Each line has to be three words or less. But other than that we give you free rein to create your one-liners. Try to make them as mean and menacing you can without venturing into inappropropriate territories. Offensive entries will be flushed down a digital drain somewhere.

Meet the Scrappers!

The winners will become SteamWorld Ambassadors. As a SteamWorld Ambassador you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release. HAT WINNERS! + Community Q&A (DLC, upgrades and more)

Howdy, partner!

We’ve got two BIG updates to share with you today. First of all we have chosen three hat winners from last week’s hat challenge! Second, we’ve prepared a meaty Q&A with your questions. We share our DLC thoughts for SteamWorld Heist, news on weapon upgrades and confirm procedurally generated levels.

Check out the Q&A:

The winning hats…

We were blown away by all the amazing hat designs submitted last week. Thanks so much! The creativity was through the roof and it was really hard nailing it down to just one winner. So instead we went with our top three hats 🙂

The winners are:

Big congratulations! We’ll have a surprise ready for you and the other ambassadors pretty soon. So stay tuned and check your inbox for e-mail! As SteamWorld Ambassadors you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist on all platforms starting this fall. You’ll also get exclusive information on the SteamWorld games as they progress.

Our artist Amanda is hard at work on incorporating the hats in the game. Some of the submitted hats were very close to what we already have designed. We were also really impressed by how many of you did a great job on matching the overall art style of SteamWorld Heist.

Design A Hat For SteamWorld Heist – Ambassador Challenge #2

Howdy, partners!

It’s already been two weeks since the first SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge in which we asked you to name a weapon that will appear in SteamWorld Heist. We were blown away by the hundreds of creative entries and chose three winners to become the first people in the world to join the official SteamWorld Ambassador Club.

Today we have a new challenge for you. Get the details in this video or read the summary down below:

This week’s Ambassador Challenge…

Today we’d like you to draw something for us. You might not know this, but steambots are crazy about hats. A sort of hat fetish, if you like. It’s central to their existence to wear a cool headpiece. Hats are collectibles that you can equip your band of rag-tag robots with (you can actually shoot off enemy hats and wear them). I think you’re really going to like this feature in the final game!

We’d like you to design a hat that will appear in SteamWorld Heist. A quick sketch on a napkin or on your phone will do just fine. Our artists will choose their favorite and incorporate it in the game. Feel free to name the hat and give it a short backstory!

If you aim carefully (or just miss) you might shoot off your enemy's hat.

SteamWorld Ambassador Winner + Community Q&A Time

steamworld-heist-ambassador-winner-and-community-questions

Howdy, partners!

With all the challenge entries from last week came many interesting SteamWorld Heist questions, so I got Brjann to join me for a short Q&A. We cover interesting topics such as platform features, multiplayer and amiibo. Check out the video below (or scroll down for the results from last week’s challenge).

Topics covered:

  1. Will the SteamWorld Ambassadors get the full game or just a demo?
  2. Does SteamWorld Heist reference SW Dig in any way? (Paul Michael Howells)
  3. Which part of Heist is the hardest to create? (Steven Oz)
  4. Will Heist have platform specific features/content? (WWBatmanD)
  5. Do you plan on adding amiibo functionality to Heist? (The Geek Guru)
  6. Will Heist have multiplayer? (Lucas)

Now, let’s announce the results from last week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge!

The SteamWorld Ambassador Winner(s)

We had no idea what response was waiting us when we announced the SteamWorld Ambassador program. The entire office was blown away by the dedicated crowd and all creative entries. Counting every single entry we got over 500 individual weapon name suggestions. Many thanks to all who participated. We owe you, big time!

Naturally, selecting just one winner was impossible, so we chose three winners! One winner whose suggestion fits the gun perfectly and two whose suggestions were too good to ignore.

The first SteamWorld Ambassadors are…

  • TheGamingWolf for providing our weapon with the name “Cranky’s Delight”!
  • James Jackson for suggesting the name “The Bolt .45” which will be given to another weapon.
  • jsty3105 for the incredibly creative pun “Rust in pieces!”. We’ll not use it as a weapon name, but it will appear in SteamWorld Heist as a bark (epic one liner).

Congratulations! The winners will receive an e-mail from us shortly and get a more formal welcome to the SteamWorld Ambassador Club. If you didn’t win this week you’ll get a new chance next week in a completely different challenge. So I hope you’re getting ready!
