Here's SteamWorld Heist on Nintendo 3DS

First look at SteamWorld Heist on 3DS + One-Liner Winners

Here's SteamWorld Heist on Nintendo 3DS

Howdy, partners!

As you know by this point, SteamWorld Heist is coming to all current-gen platforms and the release is aimed at fall 2015 – no fixed dates yet.

Many of our Nintendo 3DS-wielding fans have been anxious to see stuff for their favorite platform. Are they perhaps worried we’re going to give them the cold shoulder? No need: with SteamWorld Dig being such a hit for the 3DS, a version of SteamWorld Heist for the platform has been in the works from the very start. And now we decided it’s time to show some of it.

Down below you’ll find the first five Nintendo 3DS screenshots – both upper and lower screen – from our upcoming turn-based strategy combat game. We’re making sure to make SteamWorld Heist an awesome game, although we’re still a bit from completion, our CEO Brjánn is starting to lose sleep… not from staying up all night developing or worrying how the game will perform, but from the simply joy of playing. And feel free to replace “joy” with “addiction”. I can’t tell anymore 😉

One-liner winners

In last week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge we asked you to come up with epic one-liners for the evil Scrappers in SteamWorld Heist. We got hundreds of creative entries in all three categories (anger, glee and shock) and had a hard time choosing one winner in each category. We’ll definitely use all of them as inspiration when writing dialogue and other text. The winners are…

  • Anger: “Cogwash!” by Josiah Jones
  • Glee: “Nailed it!” by U gonna get shrekt
  • Shock: “Mother of cog!” by Soupfist

Big congratulations! We’ll have a surprise ready for you and the other ambassadors pretty soon. So stay tuned and check your inbox for e-mail! As SteamWorld Ambassadors you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist on all platforms starting this fall. You’ll also get exclusive information on the SteamWorld games as they progress.

Create EPIC ONE-LINERS for SteamWorld Heist and become a SteamWorld Ambassador

Create EPIC ONE-LINERS for SteamWorld Heist – Ambassador Challenge #3

Howdy, partners!

After last week’s reveal of the amazing hat design winners we thought it was time for a new SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge! Watch our CEO Brjánn introduce the challenge to you or scroll down to read the video summary.

This week’s challenge…

As Brjánn says in the video above we want you to create epic one-liners for the robots to say in SteamWorld Heist. More specifically we want you to create lines for the faction of robots known as Scrappers. They’re the scourge of the outer rim of habitable space and is the first enemy faction Captain Piper and her crew will encounter in SteamWorld Heist.

More specifically we want you to create three lines (in other words: three chances to win). Create your lines based on these emotions:

  1. Anger
  2. Glee (evil delight)
  3. Shock

Each line has to be three words or less. But other than that we give you free rein to create your one-liners. Try to make them as mean and menacing you can without venturing into inappropropriate territories. Offensive entries will be flushed down a digital drain somewhere.

Meet the Scrappers!

What you can win…

The winners will become SteamWorld Ambassadors. As a SteamWorld Ambassador you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release. The game will launch on one or two platforms at a time starting this fall, and prior to every platform release we’ll send you a download code for the full game. We’ll even add a few spares you can give to your friends. You and the other ambassadors also get access to exclusive information about the SteamWorld games as they progress.

How to enter…

Leave your entries (and ask any questions) in the comments below. We need your design by Friday May 22nd at 23:59 CEST (EU) / 5:59 PM EDT (NA). We’ll pick a winner over the weekend and reveal the SteamWorld Ambassadors in next week’s Tuesday update. By submitting your one-liners you give us the right to freely use them in our games. We reserve the right to judge whether the winning entries appear in the final game or not, and might alter them as we see fit.

Got what it takes? Hit us with your best shot!

HAT WINNERS! + Community Q&A (DLC, upgrades and more)

Howdy, partner!

We’ve got two BIG updates to share with you today. First of all we have chosen three hat winners from last week’s hat challenge! Second, we’ve prepared a meaty Q&A with your questions. We share our DLC thoughts for SteamWorld Heist, news on weapon upgrades and confirm procedurally generated levels.

Check out the Q&A:

The winning hats…

We were blown away by all the amazing hat designs submitted last week. Thanks so much! The creativity was through the roof and it was really hard nailing it down to just one winner. So instead we went with our top three hats 🙂

The winners are:

Our artist Amanda is hard at work on incorporating the hats in the game. Some of the submitted hats were very close to what we already have designed. We were also really impressed by how many of you did a great job on matching the overall art style of SteamWorld Heist.

Design A Hat For SteamWorld Heist – Ambassador Challenge #2

Howdy, partners!

It’s already been two weeks since the first SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge in which we asked you to name a weapon that will appear in SteamWorld Heist. We were blown away by the hundreds of creative entries and chose three winners to become the first people in the world to join the official SteamWorld Ambassador Club.

Today we have a new challenge for you. Get the details in this video or read the summary down below:

This week’s Ambassador Challenge…

Today we’d like you to draw something for us. You might not know this, but steambots are crazy about hats. A sort of hat fetish, if you like. It’s central to their existence to wear a cool headpiece. Hats are collectibles that you can equip your band of rag-tag robots with (you can actually shoot off enemy hats and wear them). I think you’re really going to like this feature in the final game!

We’d like you to design a hat that will appear in SteamWorld Heist. A quick sketch on a napkin or on your phone will do just fine. Our artists will choose their favorite and incorporate it in the game. Feel free to name the hat and give it a short backstory!

A simple sketch of your hat design will work just fine! Name it of you want to.

What you can win…

The winner will become a SteamWorld Ambassador. As a SteamWorld Ambassador you’ll be among the first in the world to play SteamWorld Heist before release. The game will launch on one or two platforms at a time starting this fall, and prior to every platform release we’ll send you a download code free of charge. We’ll even add a few spares you can give to your friends. You and the other ambassadors also get access to exclusive information about the SteamWorld games as they progress.

If you aim carefully (or just miss) you might shoot off your enemy's hat.

SteamWorld Ambassador Winner + Community Q&A Time

steamworld-heist-ambassador-winner-and-community-questions

Howdy, partners!

With all the challenge entries from last week came many interesting SteamWorld Heist questions, so I got Brjann to join me for a short Q&A. We cover interesting topics such as platform features, multiplayer and amiibo. Check out the video below (or scroll down for the results from last week’s challenge).

Topics covered:

  1. Will the SteamWorld Ambassadors get the full game or just a demo?
  2. Does SteamWorld Heist reference SW Dig in any way? (Paul Michael Howells)
  3. Which part of Heist is the hardest to create? (Steven Oz)
  4. Will Heist have platform specific features/content? (WWBatmanD)
  5. Do you plan on adding amiibo functionality to Heist? (The Geek Guru)
  6. Will Heist have multiplayer? (Lucas)

Now, let’s announce the results from last week’s SteamWorld Ambassador Challenge!

The SteamWorld Ambassador Winner(s)

We had no idea what response was waiting us when we announced the SteamWorld Ambassador program. The entire office was blown away by the dedicated crowd and all creative entries. Counting every single entry we got over 500 individual weapon name suggestions. Many thanks to all who participated. We owe you, big time!

Naturally, selecting just one winner was impossible, so we chose three winners! One winner whose suggestion fits the gun perfectly and two whose suggestions were too good to ignore.

The first SteamWorld Ambassadors are…

  • TheGamingWolf for providing our weapon with the name “Cranky’s Delight”!
  • James Jackson for suggesting the name “The Bolt .45” which will be given to another weapon.
  • jsty3105 for the incredibly creative pun “Rust in pieces!”. We’ll not use it as a weapon name, but it will appear in SteamWorld Heist as a bark (epic one liner).

Congratulations! The winners will receive an e-mail from us shortly and get a more formal welcome to the SteamWorld Ambassador Club. If you didn’t win this week you’ll get a new chance next week in a completely different challenge. So I hope you’re getting ready!

Meet the Scrappers!

Enemy Alert: Meet The Scrappers

Meet the Scrappers!

Howdy, partners!

In the latest gameplay videos and screenshots from SteamWorld Heist focus is geared towards the player’s team. And rightfully so. Captain Piper and her rag-tag band of steambots are the protagonists of the game, after all.

But whom they’re pointing their guns at are also of great interest. Among the first of the baddies the Captain and her crew encounter in Heist is the faction of robots known as Scrappers. They’re the enemies you’ve seen in our recent trailer and screenshots.

OUCH!

A Scrapper bullet to the face is NEVER a good thing.

The Scrappers are the scourge of The Outer Rim of inhabitable space. They’re nasty, vicious and menacing – but not the sharpest tools in the shed. What they lack in brains they make up for in sheer numbers and pure insanity. The root of their disturbing behaviour is unknown; so is the reason of their rapid expansion.

Fresh reports have them plunder the goods and killing the passengers of countless spaceships and space stations. Though not confirmed, there are reasons to believe they also steal entire ships. But even worse are the rumors of them partaking in the horrible practice of collecting the body parts of their victims. Whatever their goal, one thing is certain: Someone has to stop the Scrappers before it’s too late.

Captain Piper's spaceship preparing to dock a Scrapper space station.

The Scrappers come in different shapes and sizes. Each with varying abilities and a unique look. Check out three of the Scrapper types below:

The Rippers are mostly harmless but pose a threat in great numbers. More dangerous are the Choppers, since they’re slightly smarter and able to handle more potent weaponry. Out of the three the Crushers are the ones you should really watch out for. They take a lot of hits and deal the most damage.

If you compare the Scrappers in the portraits to the ones in the screenshot above you see they all have somewhat different looks to them. They are randomly generated, so it’s not likely to meet exact look-alikes twice in a row.  This is not just to please the eye. It also plays an important part in the story. Exactly how will be revealed in the finished game.

What do you think the Scrappers are after?

The Secret to Badass Space Piracy (Hint: It’s The Gear)

steamworld-heist-the-secret-to-badass-space-piracy

Hello everyone!

Last week we finally revealed a new gameplay trailer for SteamWorld Heist! In case you missed it you can watch it and get a behind-the-scenes look at how we made it.

As the trailer suggests, weapons and utilities play a large part in the outcome of the battles. In fact, choosing the right equipment is the key to long-term success. It can save you from nasty pickles and makes the difference between a glorious victory and an embarrassing visit to the repair shop.

During your travels you’ll get the chance to purchase a wide range of gear. Here are a few examples of what the arms dealers might have in store for you:

SteamWorld-Heist-Utility-Examples

Lets say you have a teammate who can only move short distances. Then the Speed Boots might be the perfect upgrade. If you find it hard to aim, maybe a pair of Aiming Goggles will do the trick? These are just the basics of how you can improve your crew’s competence in battle. In addition, every crew mate will have a unique special ability. There will be several classes as well.

Cool, huh? And we haven’t even talked weapons yet!

SteamWorld-Heist-Weapons

Choosing the right weapon can be hard. Depending on your play style and choice of combatants you’ll soon learn what works the best for you. But we still recommend you try as many weapon combinations as possible. Each have their own perks and trade-offs. The Scoped Magnum isn’t the strongest gun around, but it comes equipped with a laser sight for improved aiming. The Advanced Revolver, on the other hand, packs a great punch at the cost of some accuracy.

We really hope you’ll have fun experimenting with mixing and matching characters, weapons and gear when SteamWorld Heist is out. In case you didn’t know, the game will be released on Nintendo 3DS, Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Wii U and mobile platforms starting fall this year.

What weapons/utilities would you bring for a fictional space heist?

Behind the scenes: Making of the SteamWorld Heist gameplay trailer

Howdy, buddies!

We just released the first ever gameplay trailer for SteamWorld Heist, demonstrating the very core of the game. The footage is taken from a special demo stage we showcased to fans and press at GDC, PAX East and EGX Rezzed a few of weeks ago.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out! 😀

What do you think? This is the first time we show the UI and the battle gameplay in action. We made sure to make the trailer the very best we could and spent a lot of time choosing just the right clips and transitions.

The process of making the gameplay is actually quite interesting. What we had to do first was to get some really nice direct feed footage of the game. What that means is that we recorded the game running on a PC so we had some shots to play around with in Adobe After Effects (the software we use to edit videos).

Our level designer Marcus handled most of the recording. He knows every nook and cranny of the game’s levels, so having him do it was a no-brainer! Most of the video was recorded using a capture device called Elgato HD60. He also used a program called FRAPS for additional shots. The Elgato proved to be a really nice tool as it easily recorded and saved video files in full HD.

We used FRAPS to record some shots for the trailer.Level designer Marcus Månsson knows every nook and cranny of SteamWorld Heist's levels. So having him record the gameplay was a no-brainer!

Once we had gathered the necessary clips our graphic artist and animator Jakob pieced everything together in Adobe After Effects (using every tool at his disposal). Jakob also adjusted the audio and animated the intro sequence.

Fixing the trailer's audio and special effects was our very own Jakob Wahlberg. Every tool is needed!Jakob has an unusual way of dealing with complex tasks like cutting video.

Making the trailer was a collaborative process. In a sense all of us and a few more helped creating it. The dev team made the demo, after all, and the rest of us provided valuable feedback and helped out in the planning phase. Even your opinions on social media more or less shaped the outcome. Thank you!

Get Perspective! How To Choose Artwork For Your Video Game

Howdy, partners!

At Image & Form we’re currently six people working on the graphics for SteamWorld Heist. Two more compared to when we developed SteamWorld Dig. The artists cooperate in a range of different areas: character design, concept art, animation, art direction, background art, cutscenes, user-interface, item design and much more.

A big team equals a multitude of ideas. Especially when it comes to concept art for character designs. We must have hundreds of unused robot designs lying around. And we create new ones almost every day. Creating is usually not a problem. The hard part is to choose which ones to go with.

So we came up with a way of dealing with that problem: Instead of looking at one or a few sketches at a time we pinned them to a wall to get some (literal) perspective. That way we can see the whole picture and more easily compare each and every design to each other. Simple, yet effective.

Here’s the wall at the moment:

steamworld heist concept art wall 2

While standing before it, it’s easy to lose yourself in all creative designs. Especially when most of them are full of life and personality:

The designs we decide to go with are circled in red. And it’s not only our characters we choose this way. In the pics above you also see spaceships, guns, hats, cogs, emblems and pipes. Our technique is nothing mind-blowing, but little things like this really help us speed up the process.

A teaser for next week

We’re preparing something cool for next week’s Heistuesday. Here’s a sneak peek of what we’ve got in store for you:

Explosive reactions: What the World Thinks of SteamWorld Heist

Happy #Heistuesday!

The past two weeks have been all about showing SteamWorld Heist to the world. OK, we only showed the game at a few conventions. But a lot of people enjoyed the game and expressed their feelings about it in various ways. So we thought we’d give you a rundown of some of the impressions people have posted online.

Media impressions

“Great take on the tactical genre. Think X-Com, in 2D, with steampunk robots. I loved getting my hands on it.”
– SideQuesting

“Boom. Perfect.”
– Rock Paper Shotgun

“It looks awesome! … What I really like about SteamWorld Heist is that you have to aim your gun manually. It’s purely skill-based.”
– GameTrailers

Fan impressions

Highlight of #Rezzed for me was definitely @ImageForm’s #SteamWorldHeist!

And of course we didn’t just receive praise. Many were eager to express their feelings and we got some constructive feedback as well.

What we had to say – in front of the camera

Along with the game we also brought members from our own team. Brjann went to America for PAX East and Game Developers Conference and I (Julius) headed to London for EGX Rezzed. We did a ton of interviews at the shows with talented and awesome video creators. Check out the vids for glimpses of gameplay and lots of cool information.

How do you think we did? Did we make a good impression?
