What’s next for Image & Form?

Howdy, partners! How are you? I thought I’d give you a brief update on the SteamWorld Heist development status and use this opportunity to answer some frequently asked questions about what we’re currently up to.

SteamWorld Heist is out and it feels great!

SteamWorld Heist is out on Steam, PS4/Vita, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and iOS. It’s taken us three years to come this far. Three years?! Yeah, that’s right. It’s a long time and at this point we’re more than ready to let Captain Piper and her hearty crew steer the ship on their own. Knowing our rag-tag robots are in your capable hands feels great. Thanks for your support in making SteamWorld Heist a resounding success!

SteamWorld Heist was awarded the prestigious "Editors' Choice" on the App Store.

Will there be more content for SteamWorld Heist?

We’re not ruling out the possibility, but on the other hand we don’t have any plans for big content updates or DLC.

What about Android and Xbox One?

The plan was to release SteamWorld Heist on Xbox One and Android this year. While those versions may still happen in the future, we’re frantically working on a new game that’s eating up more and more time. At Image & Form we’re only 18 people and always have to choose our next venture carefully. Because of time constraints we’ve decided to focus on the new title and put the Android and Xbox One versions of Heist on hold.

I understand this is a letdown for many of you. Please ask me any questions about our decision in the comments. I’ll be happy to answer 🙂

So, what are we working on?

We’re cooking up something special for Nintendo Switch. It’s a secret for now and we’ll announce the game when the time’s ready! Follow us on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to stay up to date with our latest news. I think you’ll be happy to learn what it is 😉

What do you want to see from us in the future?

  • gerb1977

Can’t wait to see what’s next

  • Ryan J

Something special for the Switch, now I’m excited

  • Phoibos

Did you guys make any advancements concerning amiibos?

    • Long story short: We estimate it would cost more money than we could make from it. That’s the sad reality when it comes to SteamWorld amiibo. But things may change, so we aren’t ruling out anything 🙂

  • Stepherson Borges Dos Santos

Estou muito feliz pelo suporte de vocês ao Switch, mal posso esperar, já sei que o jogo será bom, mas estou muito curioso para saber o que é. 🙂

    • Thanks for the support! I don’t speak Portuguese, but I think Google Translate gave me a sorta accurate translation (I hope).

What game would you like us to make?

      • JayTee

Steamworld Metroidvania please! (Switch or PS4)

  • Tip O’Ne

I just want more steamworld!!! I think you should continue to make steamworld games with different genres each game. Luv the style and universe. What’s next?!?! How about a steamworld point and click adventure.

    • JayTee

      I’d love a Steamworld Metroidvania!

      • SteamWorld Dig is sort of our take on the Metroidvania genre 😀 But maybe you want to us to explore the genre even further?

        • JayTee

Ok cool though I would class Dig more as Minecraftvania! lol

Yeah exploring the genre even further would be very cool though tbh you guys are clearly talented so I’m sure whatever you make will be cool. Btw love the music in your games, +1 to your music guy or girl! 🙂

    • Interesting ideas, for sure!

  • JayTee

Hey I&F I love both Steamworld games. Would love more games set in the same world with the same quirky humour! Keep up the great work…

  • Coffee High

Well, the news that you proudly ported the game to the dead (stillborn) Wii U instead of the alive and kicking Xbox One and the second most used OS on mobile phones (android), came as quite a disappointment. After all, the difficulty in making a Wii U version had to be more time consuming and expensive than converting a game already built for the x86 architecture for PS4 and PC to run on Xbox One…
Whatever B.S. reason you give, your former fans agree you made the choice of who you wanted your money from and who you wanted to play your game. Not Xbox gamers and not Android phone users.
I admit I bought you games in the past (shame on me), expecting more. I even got a guarantee that the Xbox and Andriod versions were still coming just a few months ago in a reply directly from you.
I spent a LOT of time advertising and promoting for you during 2016, getting people excited about the game and the promise that it was coming soon to Xbox One… and now I look like an idiot… Thanks.
It may not have been great numbers, but I did end up informing over 500 people about the cancellation. Most were much angrier than I am. Most saying what I said earlier, that you chose PS4 and Wii U gamers over us. Can you blame them though? You ruined your reputation with the second largest group of gamers in the world, cutting your potential audience and income by half.
But that is your right. If you don’t want us playing your game and buying your product, then we won’t. Game companies are failing all over the place, even ones who produce for all platforms. I’d suggest you look at that fact and remember that you are a small indie company that has a very small fan base, that you just cut in half.
A somewhat famous angry gamer said most of what I had written here, but my own anger and disappointment in your company made it a bit longer. Sorry about being a fan.

    • Karl Ramstedt

Just gonna correct you a bit: Android is the single most used OS across all mobile devices.
I don’t know the exact stats on tablets, but for phones Android has a much larger market-share (something like 80% Android, 20% iOS last I checked).

      • Coffee High

Sorry, I meant android was most used, the second bit came from part of a deleted sentence. It was a redundancy rant!

    • c2h5oc2h5

Aren’t you taking this a little too seriously and too personal? SW Heist is a great game, but come on, you can still play it on PC if you really care (if you don’t, why so much anger?). If I&F decided they don’t have enough people to support more ports in favour of new game, it’s their call. Maybe it’s sad, but they do what they believe is best for their company and you shouldn’t blame them for that.

      • Coffee High

Mostly because I feel like an idiot for running around telling everyone to buy the game and then it gets cancelled. I have gotten over it, but the friends still joke about it. They say things like “Still waiting for Steamworld Heist to come out or are you gonna play Battlefield 1 with us?” and “Nice kill, did you imagine it was the guy who cancelled your Nintendo game?”
I laugh about it, but this is constant, and is going to take forever to end. I just hope someone else screws up soon so they can tease them and forget about me!

    • I’m sorry to hear this. We were planning on releasing the game on both Xbox and Android and when you got our message that was still a reality. But sometimes things change suddenly and sadly we had to make a really tough choice. We definitely appreciate your support and I understand your frustration. Really. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! Let me know if there’s anything else you’re wondering about 🙂

      • Coffee High

I wish you success, and I wouldn’t be upset if I wasn’t a fan. It’s kind of one of those go anywhere games. I sit at the PC to do work, I sit at the Xbox or PS4 to escape work, I use my phone to waste time in between. This would have been a pretty neat game for my phone, and nice to play at home. I don’t buy digital on PS4 because I was one of their 2013 identity theft victims. “Fool me once.. ” and all that. Nor have I paid for PS Plus directly. Amazon code. Anyway, the Switch may be your lucky break. I won’t be a customer because I don’t buy toy game systems, but the flipper market does, and they are already selling their massive stock of flipped systems at three times the release price. I hate fake Nintendo shortages…

    • Tanner Hower

Old school indie games just don’t sell as well in reality on Xbox they don’t have the same kind of …gamer market that a Nintendo system has. Glad to hear about a all new Switch title!

      • Coffee High

Old school indie games dont sell well on Xbox One? Let’s see, Stardew valley, inside, limbo, we happy few (not even done yet) Minecraft (started as an indie) and numerous others. GOOD old school indie games sell well. In fact, console indie games started on Xbox 360. Wow, huh?

  • Eric Nelsen

SW Heist is a great game. I’d gladly pay for DLC or sequel.

  • Karl Ramstedt

Please don’t abandon the port for Android. I’d love to be able to play this game on my tablet. The Xbox One port seems more like “back-burner material” if you ask me. Because most people have an Android or iOS tablet in addition to their gaming console or PC, so covering the mobile bases would likely be the best way to assure access for everybody.

    • Thanks for the support 🙂 We’ll post our future updates here on the blog as they happen 😀

  • c2h5oc2h5

Any hints on what the genre of your new game will be? Is it still Steamworld? I hope so! 🙂

Anyway, I’ve originally bought 3DS out of Pokemon nostalgia. But once I got my console I’ve also checked Dig because it was looking interesting… and I love it! Now I’m playing Heist and it’s even better. You guys are giving me a very good reason to buy Switch by making your new game for that system! 😀

    • It’s still SteamWorld! Well share more about the next game when we’re ready. Thanks for the love!

  • Indie Geek

I got SteamWorld Collection for the Wii U for Christmas and I must say, both games are PHENOMENAL and I can’t wait for your next one!

I have a random question, though. Some of the dialogue in Heist reminds me of the TV show Firefly. Was this an intentional choice?

    • It’s intentional! We’re big fans 🙂 Thanks for the love!

  • MewMaster95

Can’t wait for all of the new and amazing things you guys have to offer this year! :3

Also, I have a question: Is the hat DLC (and the three hat contest winner hats) on the 3DS version? I can only find it on Steam.

  • Leod

Word of a new Steamworld game is one of the (admittedly few) reasons why I pre-ordered a Switch. Not even kidding. Can’t wait for the reveal. Whatever it turns out to be, it’s a day one purchase for me.

I don’t know how you guys managed to do it, but there are references in Dig/Heist to just about everything I love in life: Sergio Leone, Firefly, and even Office Space. GET OUT OF MY HEAD, I&F!!!

(nah, it’s cool. you can stay)

  • Ricardo

    Great game!
I liked the first game that came out in digital version (eshop) and I decided to buy it again.

The second game is excellent, I’m glad to have them in my collection.

See ya in nintendo Switch. =)

  • Joe Knight

I still want more levels for Anthill on ios lol 🙁 Such a great game that is with so much possibility for more content. It seems a little blind to pick up development on 1 single platform that is known to have low quality titles and low sales compared to ios/xbox. Steamworld was fun too, haven’t finished it yet but I come back to it on and off. Have played all your games so far but unfortunately I will not be picking up a switch anytime in the near future. 🙁

  • RealBull

I want an action RPG like a hack-n-slash! Maybe that’s what Steamworld Quest is? How about a side-scrolling beat-em-up RPG like River City Ransom

  • Paulo Di Gioia

Will it release on android anytime soon?

  • Lars Geerts

I saw the steamworld dig 2 trailer on the Nintendo YouTube channel. Looks good you guys! I hope you guys have some real fun making the game! good luck!

  • Denys

Will we ever get the outsider DLC on IOS ?
